The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association released district assignments in Class 2A basketball on Friday.
The Pawhuska boys and girls basketball teams will travel to Dale for district play, which will be Feb. 17-18. Pawhuska will face the teams from Dale and Rejoice Christian. The seedings and brackets haven’t been released, yet.
Neither of the Pawhuska basketball coaches were pleased with their assignment to Dale, which is a 121 mile trip.
“It’s unfortunate that they would send us to Dale,” PHS girls basketball coach Luke Broadbent said.
Pawhuska boys basketball coach Jake Christenson said, “I’m not happy about that. No amount of pouting about it or being mad about it is going to change it.”
Dale (19-3) was ranked third in Class 2A in the Jan. 29 OSSAA girls basketball rankings, and should draw the No. 1 seed in the district tournament. Dale, which has won 9 of its last 11 games, will get to choose their first-round foe.
Pawhuska, which has won 4 of its last 5, was 13-8 heading into Tuesday’s game with Pawnee. Rejoice Christian took a 6-14 record into Tuesday night’s game at Cascia Hall.
Rejoice Christian has won just once in its last five games.
Broadbent said he believes Pawhuska is capable of beating Dale. It’s possible the Lady Huskies could advance to area play from their assignment. Two teams will advance from the district tournament.
“It’s a tough tournament, but I think we can get out of it,” Broadbent said.
In the boys bracket, Dale (12-10) was ranked No. 20 in the OSSAA rankings, and was riding a six-game winning streak into Tuesday’s game against Vanoss.
Pawhuska, which is 3-2 in its last five games, had a 10-11 record heading into Tuesday’s game against Pawnee.
Rejoice Christian School held a 8-12 record heading into Tuesday’s game against Cascia Hall. Rejoice Christian has won once in its last five games. Rejoice Christian’s last victory came on Jan. 20 — a 65-64 triumph over Verdigris in the Chouteau Tournament.
“We will scout Rejoice and Dale and find a way to get to area. You just go attack it.”
