Coming of its first loss — following an 11-0 start to the season — some might have wondered how the Caney Valley High School girls’ team would respond.
The Lady Trojans (12-1) blitzed to a 16-4 lead and went on to defeat the Dewey High School Lady Doggers, 60-53, on Friday, in Ramona.
Chenoa Webb dropped in 17 points, followed by Katie Cagle with 10, to spearhead the Caney Valley victory.
Addison Moll drained 19 points for Dewey, while Madison Lawrence added 11.
Veteran Lady Trojan head coach Deric Longan said even he didn’t know exactly how his girls would respond following last Tuesday’s 68-40 loss to Mounds.
“After that first loss, you worry always that your team is going to come out disappointed or come out angry,” he explained. “I think we came out a little more on the angry side. We shot the ball pretty well the first half.”
By halftime, Caney Valley owned a 19-point lead, 33-14, and never looked back.
But, Dewey did achieve one noteworthy goal — limiting Caney Valley’s leading scorer Gavy Myers to single-digit scoring.
Myers — who is averaging in the high-teens in points — contributed nine points.
“They played pretty tough, aggressive defense on her,” said Longan, noting that Dewey head coach Ernest Jones mostly stuck talented athlete Karissa Jones on Myers.
Myers also sat on the bench, with foul trouble, for a good chunk of the second half.
But, a vital aspect of this year’s Caney Valley team is that if one player is having an ‘off’ night, other players step up, Longan said.
In this game, Webb took up a large part of the slack.
“I thought we played a pretty good first half,” summarized Longan. “We had a little foul trouble in the first half, which made us go to our bench a little more than normal.”
Nine different girls scored for the Lady Trojans.
