BETHEL – The Wildcats held a 26-14 lead at halftime, but five second-half turnovers were their undoing as they lost 58-33 to Pauls Valley Friday.

“In the first half, we scored when we had the ball and stopped them on defense,” Coach Joey Ginn said. “In the second half we turned the ball over five times (four interceptions, one fumble). That was the reason why we lost the game.”

Bethel trailed 8-7 after the first quarter but took a 26-14 lead into the locker room at the half. Pauls Valley turned up the intensity outscoring 32-7 in the second half.

Gunner Smith threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown and threw four interceptions in the loss.

Devin Acklin hauled in 10 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Drae Wood contributed five receptions for 50 yards and a score.

Bethel (1-5, 0-3) returns to action Oct. 12 with a home game against Purcell. Kickoff is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
