The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art will offer a variety of fine-art and theater classes for children during the upcoming school year. In those classes, students will experience drawing, painting, ceramics, and printmaking, as well as honing acting techniques.

The museum’s after-school art program has been operating for more than 12 years, but this is the first time these classes are open to ages 5-6.

“We’ve had much demand from parents of this age group,” reports Donna Merkt, museum curator of education. “Hoping to meet our community’s needs, we are excited to offer classes for students ages 5-18.”

Classes are open to all students. Home school students are welcome and invited to attend.

Online registration is now open for fall classes at www.mgmoa.org/asa-class.

All classes are five weeks and take place on Tuesday (art) or Thursday (theater) evenings. Tuesday evening classes are divided by age group: 4-5 p.m. (ages 5-6), 5:15-6:15 p.m. (ages 7-10), and 6:30-7:30 p.m. (ages 11-18). Thursday evening schedules are different.

The first fall art class, Monart Realistic Drawing with artist Jude Delaney, begins Tuesday, Sept. 11. Participating students learn to draw realistically by focusing on five basic elements of shape families that combine to form all objects.

The second fall art class, Watercolor Painting with artist Beth Wilhelm, begins Tuesday, Oct. 16. By using techniques like layering, masking, resist and more, students learn to make watercolor paintings that have realism, depth and interest.

Art classes culminate in an art show and reception at the end of the semester.

Emily Coley teaches the theater class in the fall for students ages 5-10. These students participate in one or more short plays from which they will learn about the rehearsal process, creating characters, and line memorization. This class is Thursdays, 5-6:30 beginning Nov. 1. Performances are presented Thursday, Dec. 13. Theater for teens and tweens is slated for the spring.

Tuition for After-School Art is $80 and includes all supplies. Discounts are available for museum members. Scholarships are available for students receiving assistance or for families meeting income eligibility for assistance. The museum is an EPIC vendor and will bill EPIC directly for participating students.
