Piedmont 6 Lone Grove 5

In a game matching last years Class 4A and 5A state runner-up teams, it was the Lady Wildcats narrowly surviving against Lone Grove in the opening game for both squads Thursday.

Shelby Stevenson and Logan Graves gave the Lady Horns a dream start in the bottom of the first inning when Stevenson collected an RBI single before Graves registered a fielder’s choice RBI.

However, Piedmont responded with five runs in the top of the second to grab the advantage.

But, Lone Grove was back within touching distance in the bottom of the third when Stevenson scored on a wild pitch, before Paige Anderson slapped an RBI single off a line drive to make it 5-4.

Piedmont got an insurance run in the top of the fourth to make it 6-4, before Stevenson hit her first home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning.

Unfortunately for the Lady Horns, there would be no more scoring for them as they suffered their first defeat of the season.

Emmy Guthrie took the loss on the hill, throwing five innings of work. She allowed six earned runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
