Martha “Marty” Evelyn Griffin 71, went to be with the Lord June 11, 2018 at her home in Quapaw, Okla. She was born in Bella Vista, Calif. on July 13th, 1946 to Wilford “Hayes” and Bethel “Becky” Evelyn Griffin.
She is an enrolled member of the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma and is of Osage descent. Martha was very involved in her Native American culture. She belonged to the Native American Church Barnsdall Chapter. She was a member of the Promenade Indian Club and an Eastern Star OES, Quapaw Chapter. She enjoyed going to powwows and watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren dance, and visiting with family and friends. Marty was always up for a new adventure, while in her teens she would spend her summers working on a dude ranch in Colorado. She ran a Limousine cattle ranch operation in Miami, Okla. while in her twenties. In her late twenties she earned an Associates of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Development and began working at Seneca Indian School as a head start teacher. In her thirties she enjoyed being a mother. She often said “if I could have skipped you kids and went straight to the grandchildren I would have.” In her fifties she enjoyed sewing and making moccasins which turned into a full-time job. In her sixties she sat back and relaxed and enjoyed her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents Chief Victor and Minnie Track-Griffin, Oscar and Bernice King. Her parent “Hayes” and “Becky” Griffin, her two sisters Lucy Griffin and Judy Pebeahsy, and one daughter Martha Mechelle Iron.
She is survived by her two daughters Malinda and husband Delmar McFarland, Virginia and husband Daryll Mouse, adopted daughter Suzanne Lookout. Two nieces Rebecca and Julia Pebeahsy and Charles Pebeahsy, III. Six grandchildren Michael Mouse, Diane Yazzie, Vernon Brown, Collen Mouse, Stacia Forbis, Kristen Mouse. Eight great grandchildren Rebecca Brown, Lana Robbins, Aspen Matthews, Mia Forbis, Hathan Hayes Mouse, Easton Matthews, Hayzlee Evelyn Mouse, and Kayden Keys.
She will lie in state at the Native American Church summer house at Beaver Springs park in Quapaw, Okla. Services will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday June 14, 2018. Native American rights to be conducted by Jeremy Olsen. Christian services conducted by Geoff Buffalo.
