The Bartlesville Regional United Way celebrated the conclusion of the United We Rock 2017 campaign at its annual meeting Tuesday. BRUW stakeholders gathered to honor the people and businesses who were instrumental in the last campaign raising $2.2 million, the fourth-highest amount in its 78-year history.
Karen Leinen was also presented with the 2018 Spirit Award. Leinen joined the United Way board in 2016, but had been a champion and supporter long before that. Through her job at ConocoPhillips, Leinen has worked on the company’s internal campaign and been a strong supporter of the United Way Golf Scramble.
The United Way Spirit Award recognizes exceptional commitment and leadership in the community. Nominees must demonstrate the spirit of service to the community of Bartlesville by giving, volunteering, or being a champion for an organization. This person can be counted on and will go above and beyond to help make the community a better place for everyone.
Leinen deserves to be recognized “for her tireless support of Bartlesville’s many nonprofits and her willingness to help in any capacity and her sweet and giving spirit,” nominator Brenda Williamson said.
Leinen attended the University of Central Oklahoma, and worked as an executive assistant at the Bartlesville Development Corporation for 10 years. She then took a job at ConocoPhillips, working first as a meetings specialist, then as a senior analyst Bartlesville community relations. Through her work at COP, she has been the face of ConocoPhillips’ corporate giving in the community, having a positive impact on countless area nonprofits.
She is very involved in the Bartlesville community personally, serving on the Samaritan Counseling and Growth Center and Bartlesville Regional United Way boards.
“I am very excited that Karen is the recipient of the Spirit Award this year,” CEO and President Lisa Cary said. “Her continuous support to make our community better by selfless acts of service is something I admire.”
The United Way also honored the business partners who went above and beyond for the 2017 United We Rock campaign. Businesses that were recognized increased their giving over the previous year, had at least 50 percent employee participation, participated in a campaign event and advertised their participation in the United Way campaign.
“Working with the Campaign Coordinators was eye opening and inspiring!” Bartlesville Regional United Way Campaign Manager Whitney Virden said. “Through their leadership and collaborative efforts with their co-workers, their visions came to life at their company kickoffs/internal fundraising events, and it paid dividends. Not only were they able to raise awareness for our community, they were able to increase the funds raised from their previous year. Some of the Outstanding Businesses even doubled their last year’s goal!”
Businesses honored were Arvest, BancFirst, Bartlesville Community Center, Bartlesville Radio, Blue Sky Bio, Central National Bank, Chevron Phillips, City of Bartlesville, ConocoPhillips, Doenges Family of Autos, Enterprise Rent a Car, EY, Phillips 66, QuikTrip, Rogers State University, Stotts Archambo Mueggenborg & Barclay and Truity Credit Union.
“It is amazing what can happen when a company Lives United,” Virden said. “The power of their unity and generous giving can been seen throughout our community. From kids to senior citizens, their dollars are making an impact, and, every day, the fabric of our community is changing for the better thanks to their internal fundraising efforts.”
