North, South Korea reach agreement
SEOUL, South Korea (TNS) — Talks between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and a South Korean delegation reached a “satisfactory” agreement, North Korean state media reported on Tuesday.
Kim hosted the 10-member South Korean delegation, including President Moon Jae-in’s top security adviser, Chung Eui Yong, at a dinner on Monday night and held an “openhearted talk” with them, KCNA reported.
The discussions included a possible summit, ways of “easing the acute military tensions on the Korean Peninsula” and of continuing a dialogue, KCNA wrote in an English-language article.
The event marked the first time that Kim has met with high-ranking officials from the South since he took office in 2011 and comes after Kim Yo Jong, Kim’s sister, visited South Korea in February during the Winter Olympics.
It is hoped the meeting will pave the way for talks between Pyongyang and the United States.
Mexico celebrates Del Toro’s wins
MEXICO CITY (TNS) — Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar victories for best director and best picture for “The Shape of Water” have set off an outpouring of national pride and triggered celebrations in his Mexican homeland.
Many commentators on social media and elsewhere pointedly contrasted the success of Del Toro and other Mexican artists in the U.S. film industry with what many in the country assail as President Donald Trump’s stereotyping of Mexicans as lawbreakers.
Del Toro won the Oscars during the Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday. Scores of Mexicans took to the streets early Monday to fete the director while prominent entertainers and others publicly lauded del Toro.
Del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” — a Cold War era tale about a love affair between a cleaning woman at a government laboratory and a creature that looks like a cross between a fish and a human — also garnered Oscars for best production design and original score.
