Camping season is less than a month away for members of the Wheeler Dealer Camping Club. The group met this past Saturday at Grill 125 in Pawhuska for lunch to hear about the March campout from hosts Jon and Kathy Tippin as well as other campout plans for the year.

Seventeen club members devoured delicious ½ pound burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and shrimp and chicken dinners. Grill 125 isn’t your typical hamburger place, but a combination restaurant/sports bar on the north side of the Main Street in downtown Pawhuska, a convenient location with club members from Bartlesville, Ponca City and Pawnee attending. Highlight of the lunch was a “crazy hat” contest. First place winner was Joe Brown, Bartlesville with his fishing hat containing lures used to catch hundreds of fish on Canadian fishing trips. Second place was Roger Blake, Ponca City with his turkey hat that he also used as a campsite decoration last fall.

The first campout of the season will be the weekend of March 9-11 at McFadden Cove on Kaw Lake. Plans include tours of the Conoco Museum, Marland’s Grand Home, Marland Mansion and Pioneer Woman Museum. Highlight of the campout will be the annual Camp McFaddden Beast Feast that Saturday night.

Joe and Pat Brown, Bartlesville, will host the April campout at Skiatook. Plans are to tour the Gilcrease Museum to see the exhibit “Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera” and Tulsa Botanic Garden.

“Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera” is the first exhibition to explore in depth Rockwell’s richly detailed study photographs, created by the artist as references for his iconic paintings.

Other campouts scheduled include one in Carthage, MO and Hutchinson, KS.

Wheeler Dealer monthly campouts are held weekends from March to November with only lunch or breakfast gathering in August and February and a special Christmas Party in December. Members can make their own reservations at many of the Corps lakes through, the Corps of Engineers reservation service.

Current members are from Bartlesville, Pawnee and Ponca City. However, anyone from northern Oklahoma or southern Kansas is invited to join.

Persons interested in joining or knowing more should contact Cecil, president, at 580-767-0170 in Ponca City or Joe, secretary, at 918-977-0805 in Bartlesville.
