Nowata County commissioners announced Nowata resident Kenny Freeman was appointed as the new Nowata County sheriff.
“He was sworn in (the morning of Feb. 6) at the commissioners meeting,” said District 2 Nowata County Commissioner Bud Frost. “We wish him luck.”
“I’m on duty right now,” Freeman said Feb. 6. “I want to get back to community policing and to protect and serve.”
Sheriff Sandy Hadley’s last day was last Feb. 1. She had announced her decision to retire in early December. She had stepped up to the position after former Sheriff Rick Miller resigned in early March 2017. He had held the position since 2015.
The Nowata County commissioners had appointed Erich Richter as sheriff in early April 2016, but the process was halted when District Judge Carl Gibson refused to administer the oath of office to Richter because he did not live in Nowata County.
“My main plan now is to get the office in order,” Freeman said. “I’m old school, and have been doing this for a long time in Nowata County.”
