John Monroe Culwell Jr., age 63, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 22, at his home in Shawnee.

John worked many years as a supervising groundskeeper at a golf course in Texas and moved to Shawnee about 10 years ago to be closer to his family. He was employed at Finley and Cook at the time of his death. John will be remembered as a kind hearted man who worked hard and never met a person who didn't like him. John was proud of his Choctaw heritage and had many interests including horticulture, hunting and fishing. He was a natural collector and was able to see the beauty in old items that others could not. He would say he felt the spirit of the past in the arrowheads and antlers he collected.

John was born in Santa Anna, California, on Aug. 10, 1955, to John Monroe Culwell and Joan Nichols Culwell. John graduated from Meeker High School in 1973. He was a devoted son, father and "Pops" to his granddaughter Mya, whom he had a special connection with.

Those left to cherish his memories are his son Jeff Culwell, wife Tamara, granddaughter Mya, all of Harrah; John’s mother, Joan Keel a longtime resident of Meeker, his five siblings: Barbara Dickens, Patricia and Stanley Doss, Robert and Jan Culwell, Ken and Lisa Keel, and David Keel, as well as other family members and many friends.

The family would like to invite you to celebrate John's life Friday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Harrah United Methodist Church, located at 2224 Harrison Ave, Harrah.

In lieu of flowers the family would like you to donate in his memory to the American Heart Association at heart.org or call 1-800-242-8721.
