Alva notched its first District 2A-1 football victory Thursday by drilling the Pawhuska Huskies, 68-21, at Ormand Beach Memorial Stadium.
After the Huskies stopped their first two offensive series, the Goldbugs were denied only one other time the remainder of the night. Alva scored touchdowns off its last four possessions in the opening half and on all six of its second-half opportunities.
The contest remained scoreless for nearly nine minutes before the visitors went up by six with a 33-yard draw play. A second rushing TD put the Goldbugs in front, 14-0, with 1:08 left in the first quarter. Alva soon increased that lead to 20 by passing for a score.
Two minutes into the second quarter, Pawhuska got on the board when senior Ben Gray took a pass from quarterback Tyler Wilson for a 78-yard touchdown — with Caleb Bruce kicking the extra point.
Alva expanded its advantage, to 26-7, prior to the break. The second half started with the Goldbugs cashing in a Huskie fumble and the visitors moved further ahead (40-7) with the first of their two punt-return TDs.
PHS’ Wilson and Warren Graves combined for a 58-yard score through the air in the third quarter and had a 75-yard throw-and-catch TD in the fourth. Graves added an extra-points’ run after the second.
Alva (5-3, 1-3) snapped a three-game district losing streak. Pawhuska (2-5, 1-3) goes on the road against the district’s unbeaten Chisholm Longhorns next Friday. The Huskies finish the regular season at home versus 2A-1’s current leader, the Perry Maroon.
